Reflection About ICT in Biology Course

After one semester I take ICT in Biology course, many new thing and ICT issues in school that I have learned through this course such as Smart School Concept, Data Logging, Modelling and  Simulation.

Through data logging (Engage model), based on the picture given, teacher can elicit student prior knowledge before start teaching about the topic on that day. For me, Engage is like the learning outcome of the topic. It is mean, at the end of lecture, student should be able to identify the subtopic, for example is, factor effect the rate of photosynthesis. At least, before teaching-learning process begin, student can think about the topic by themselves based on their prior knowledge. My perceptions towards Empower is how  we plan and doing the experiment from the apparatus arrangement until the discussion about the result that we get from the experiment. Based on the Empower that I do, I am very excited when do the experiment using the data logger such as temperature sensor and dissolved oxygen sensor and handle the experiment by myself. Sincerely, I never seen and never use the type of sensor during my school time. It was be supsrise when the result and graph were automatically (at the same time) appear at the computer. The purpose of Enhance is to make student related the experiment with the situation that happen in our daily life. So, student will think more.

The values implementing this model is we were feel free to choose any topic in biology subject (form 4 and form 5). Based on the reseach at the internet, we know a lot of example experiment that we can do at school soon. The difficulties is at Engage and Enhance part. We must do many research to show the best situation to elicit student prior knowledge at Engage part. It were same to Enhance. We must choose the best and suitable situation in our daily life to related with the experiment topic.

For me, the usefulness of data logging is student no need to look and wait until the experiment end. Through the data logging, all data were recorded automatically and exactly even student leave the experiment for about more than one day. Based on the exactly result and graph shown at the computer, student easily to do comparison and more understanding the topic. For simulation, student can feel more excited to learn about topic because the simulation that we get have audio system, a good picture colour, have animation and have a short note. Thus, student did not feel boring and feel fun to know more about the topic. For the modelling, it was good in adressing student problems in learning because student can see the change of variable by adjust the button or click the button at the modelling page.

However, at the school, I do not know either I can see all teacher will be fully used the data logging, simulation and modelling in the classroom. Teacher maybe just explain and not show to student how to use the data logging system. It is because, they also not know how to use very well the data logging. For simulation and modelling, I can imagine, only one or two teacher use this in the classroom because some teacher thought that ICT is very troublesome because they need to create something attractive modelling and simulation for every topic. Thus, they feel  comfortable to just talk and continue talk without use any ICT presentation.

Every problem, still have solve way. Thus, to overcome the used of data logging, the school must prepared someone expert about ICT, so that, teacher can refer to them if have any problem in using data logging system. Besides that, the school side also must make sure all the sensor and computer were in very well condition (not breakdown) so that, all student no need to wait for a long time to use the data logger. For the simulation and modelling, teacher must always be prepared to teach student. The most important thing is, teacher must be able to work hard and create attractive animation or modelling to make sure all student feel fun and enjoy to understanding the topic that you want to teach.
